Why Debate?
Debate is strongly correlated with academic achievement, involving extemporaneous speaking, formal training in logic and extensive research using resources typically reserved for post-graduate work; consequently, it is widely recognized as one of the premier academic extra-curricular activities available in high school. Former high school debaters include constitutional law professor Lawrence Tribe, former Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence Summers, Republican political strategist Karl Rove, Senator and 2004 Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry, editor of the Washington Quarterly Alex Lennon as well as plethora of academics and practioners in both the public and private sector.

MEETINGS: Thursdays immediately after school in 305.

Northview Debate Team Scores 6 Trophies At Tournament

The Northview High School Novice, Junior Varsity and Varsity Debate teams combined their efforts at the recent “Brookwood High School Maroon & Gold Classic Forensics Tournament”in Snellville to bring home six trophies and 3 plaques for their outstanding performances. Individual trophy recipients were varsity team members Nafees Syed for the Lincoln-Douglas competition and Jessica Falcone for the Extemporaneous Speaking competition. The Novice Policy Debate teams of Gene Kim/Ivana Mao and Harry Li/Karl Guo earned team trophies as did the Varsity Policy Debate teams of Seong An/David Zhou and Paurush Babbar/Stefan Jiang. Individual Speaker Award plaques were won by Harry Li and Ivana Mao in the Novice Division and by Stefan Jiang in the Varsity Division.
Faculty sponsor Jay Blanton says he was particularly proud of the performance of the Novice team of Vibin Kundukulam/Mimi Li who, due to restrictions on the number of teams that could be entered at each of the 3 levels (Varsity, JV and Novice), found themselves stepping up to compete in the JV category in their very first tournament ever, where they went 3-2 in the preliminary rounds.
