History is a subject that studies the past, but it is very closely tied to today. Contrary to the common conviction, history is not merely the study of bygone eras.  Ultimately, history is story of humankind in all times past, present, and prospective.  By studying history, we can put our own lives into a larger context to determine how we arrived at the present and what we can do to constructively influence the future.

Mission:   The mission of History Club is to develop student interest in history by bringing history to a more personal level.  We accomplish this by focusing on the lives of ordinary people who have lived, are living, and will live through history.

Vision and Activities:   In class, we are taught about the basics—great nations, pivotal wars, and overall trends.  In History Club, we will delve into more specific topics such as what kinds of people were citizens of these nations, how these wars were fought, and what drove these trends.  We will try to recreate the lifestyle of certain people and the atmosphere of their times with various activities that include:

  • debating over past and current events
  • learning from guest speakers
  • reading excerpts from literature
  • cooking historical foods
  • watching historical films
  • taking informal trips to nearby historical sites, cultural restaurants, or a Medieval Times show
  • relaxed musing and discussion over history

Through these activities, members will better understand and appreciate their own place in history and will learn to embrace their roles as responsible players in the ever unfolding tale of humankind.  Each meeting will allow members to benefit intellectually by inspiring each other with their mutual interest in history as well as socially by building a harmonious group through club activities.
