GRADUATION 2008
Graduation will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, May 25, 2008, at The Georgia Dome. This Atlanta landmark is downtown and offers ample seating for the entire community. Dome security procedures require admission by ticket only. Each graduate will receive ten tickets; however, additional tickets may be requested if needed. In other words, there is not a limit as to how many guests may attend, but each guest must have a ticket.
All students planning to participate in the ceremony must pay the fee. The fee covers:
- cap & gown
- printing of programs
- floral decorations
- facilities rental
Required attire for graduation in addition to the official cap and gown is as follows: ladies- a nice dress (absolutely no pants, shorts, or jeans) and dress shoes or dress sandals (no flip-flops or athletic shoes); men- dress slacks (absolutely no shorts or jeans), dark socks, dress shoes (no athletic shoes, sandals or flip-flops), dress shirt, and tie. Students who are not properly dressed will not be permitted to participate in graduation. Please encourage your child to wear the various honor pins and cords he/she has earned over the past four years.
All seniors must complete the check-out clearance process before leaving campus after their last exam. This includes verifying that all books and school property have been returned, all fines cleared, and all disciplinary actions satisfied. Students not completing this process may not participate in graduation or request school records. Senior exams begin on Monday, May 19th- all exams and coursework must be successfully completed by Thursday, May 22nd in order to be eligible to participate in the ceremony.
Parking at adjacent lots provides easy access to the facility; the parking fee is $10. The Dome is also easily accessible via MARTA; exit at the GA Dome/World Congress Center Station and take the bridge to Gate A. It is advised that you do not attempt to travel via the downtown expressway due to weekend construction! I recommend traveling the "scenic route" via Hwy 141 south all the way into Atlanta; take North Avenue to Northside Drive, then Northside Drive to the Dome. Another possibility is take I-285 to Northside Drive then south on Northside Drive to the Dome. For specific directions, visit www.gadome.com/getting/driving.html. Above all, please do not risk getting caught in the construction delays!
All on-line course work, including testing, for graduating seniors was to be completed by May 9t h. An Official Transcript from the vendor providing the on-line course must be received by the Counseling Office by mail or FAX, 770-497-3840 by May 20th. The deadline must be adhered to in order for a student's name to be listed in the Graduation Program.
If for any reason your child will not complete his/her diploma requirements by May 23rd, please encourage him/her to stay on task. Students can continue in summer school or through the Georgia Virtual High School and earn a diploma in August. If all requirements are still not met, options include enrolling in the fall at Independence High School or in a GED program. There are several recognized on-line courses of study that will satisfy diploma requirements as well.
All students will be professionally photographed as diplomas are conferred. Parents are welcome to take pictures from their seats; however, persons will not be permitted in the aisles or on the arena floor for any reasons. Students will receive the traditional diploma covers. Students may also order a nice frame/mat for their diplomas at a cost of $39. You may order on-line at www.firstartworks.com/diplomaworks/buy.html or by completing an order form in the main office.
