Eligibility for Competitive Interscholastic Activities
Students participating in competitive interscholastic activities must pass five (5) out of six (6) classes during the previous semester. These subjects must carry credit towards graduation or grade promotion.  Summer school is an extension of the second semester and will count towards eligibility for the first semester of the following school year. Students not meeting this requirement are not eligible for interscholastic competition until they complete this requirement at the end of a subsequent semester and are on-track for graduation.

  1. All students participating in interscholastic activity must take six classes during the semester of participation and have passed a minimum of five classes the previous semester.
  2. Students in grades 10 – 12 must also be on track for graduation as follows:
    1. earned four (4) units of credit toward graduation;
    2. promotion to 11th grade and earned ten (10) units of credit toward graduation;
    3. promotion to 12th grade and earned sixteen (16) units of credit toward graduation.
  3. Ineligible students cannot try out for a team or program even if the team or program will not be in operation until the following semester.
  4. A ninth grade student must pass five (5) courses during spring of his/her eighth grade year to be eligible for sports during the first semester.  Subjects completed in summer school may count towards eligibility.
  5. No teacher may require or influence a student to participate in a summer camp.
  6. Any administrator or teacher who knowingly permits an ineligible student to participate in an activity is subject to revocation of his/her certification.
  7. All students must have a physical exam on file before tryouts or athletic practice begins.  Athletes must provide a waiver stating that they have appropriate insurance coverage or purchase school insurance.
  8. All eligibility requirements established by GHSA must be met and maintained.
  9. Fifth-year students are not eligible to participate in competitive events.  They may participate in other activities provided they meet eligibility requirements.
  10.  Transfer papers that are hand delivered are acceptable for temporary placement but should not be used for granting eligibility.  Eligibility should be granted upon receipt and verification of official records.
  11.  All athletes must obey training rules at all times, especially the Interscholastic Competition Drug/Alcohol/Tobacco Policy concerning the non-use of alcohol, tobacco, and controlled substances, and consequence for violations of the policy.
    •  Athletes are expected to obey all local, state, and federal laws.

Athletic Regulations

1) Students must be present for at least three (3) classes to participate in a sport that day.

2) Suspended students (ISS or OSS) may not participate in any school activity until the suspension is completed.

3) Each student must return all equipment or pay for the replacement of any item not returned. Student records and transcripts will be held until all equipment obligations have been cleared.

4) Students who quit or are removed from a team may not participate in another sport until the start of the next season.

In order to earn an award, a student athlete must remain on the squad in which he/she is participating until the entire schedule has been completed or until he/she has been released by the coach.

Substance Abuse

A student, regardless of quantity, shall not:

•buy, be in possession of, or use a beverage containing alcohol
•be in possession of, or use tobacco on campus or at a school function
coaches and sponsors may discipline students for off-campus tobacco use
•use, consume, possess, buy, sell, or distribute any controlled substance

Students are responsible for off-season and out-of-school behavior. This rule applies to a student’s entire career at Northview High School.

It is not a violation for a student to be in possession of a controlled substance specifically prescribed for the student’s personal use by his/her doctor.

Student possession of controlled substances at home under parent supervision or for religious purposes will be considered on an individual basis.

Penalties for violation include:

First Violation: After confirmation of the first violation, the student will lose a minimum of 20% up to a maximum of 100% of his/her regular season schedule. The student may be prohibited from ever representing Northview at any time in the future. A discipline committee consisting of an assistant principal, coach or sponsor, and an at-large teacher selected by the principal will hear and decide on the actions on a case-by-case basis. A student in a non-competitive situation would be dealt with on an individual basis by the discipline committee.

Second Violation: After confirmation of the second violation, the student will lose a minimum of 100% of his/her regular season schedule. The student may be prohibited from representing Northview at any time in the future.

Third Violation: A third violation will result in the student being prohibited from participating in any activity sponsored by Northview High School.

Any misconduct, misrepresentation of the school, or any other act deemed detrimental to Northview High School will be referred to the disciplinary committee for action. The act may or may not occur in school, in transit to or from a school activity, or during a school activity.
